Kelly Boyer Sagert began writing Everything to God in Prayer: A Writer’s Weekly Devotional during a “tumultuous” time in her life–and in the life of her church. Her church, as she explains, “suffered significant financial problems and went through multiple ministers. All was uncertain and, sometimes, even chaotic.”
When it rains, it pours. Sagert continues by saying, “To add to the situation, I was hospitalized with colon disease and underwent nine surgeries in just 14 months, four of them major and one of them an emergency. Right before my emergency surgery, I’d been told that, without a colostomy, I might not survive the night. With a colostomy, my bodily waste went into an external bag and it was a challenging way for to me to live during the eight months before the colostomy could be safely reversed. Plus, my work life was undergoing significant changes and I wasn’t sure how that would affect my income–right when I had more expenses. During this time, I found myself thinking, Why me, God? Why does this all need to happen at once? Why now?”
Sagert’s journey of discernment served as the genesis of this book, which contains 52 devotionals, each complete with Scripture and prayer–and then a writing exercise to help readers explore their own spiritual lives in more depth, and to begin to define what ministries God may be calling them to. The answers to these questions can assist readers in creating testimonies that will help them to witness for Christ.
She is particularly drawn to water and so several of the devotionals are connected to this life-giving fluid. In one devotional, she shares various Bible verses that use water s a symbol: for spiritual cleansing, salvation, the Holy Spirit and more. The exercise that follows reads like this:
Physically do something with water while meditating on the Scripture with the deepest meaning for you. Pour the water in a clear bowl, water thirsty flowers, sprinkle drops on your arm. Take a long refreshing drink and notice how the water feels on your tongue. Then free write what this means to you.
During the two years that Sagert dealt with colon-related challenges, she needed to slow down her pace of life considerably, sometimes almost to a halt. She often felt frustrated but eventually realized that, no matter her state of being, she could always take everything to God in prayer. Thus, the title was born.
