How many Americans are Waiters or Waitresses?
According to Statisticbrain.com, which utilizes statistics from the January 14th, 2015 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics report, 12,027,340 Americans are involved with food preparation and serving related occupations. Out of that pool of employees, 2,244,480 are considered waiters and waitresses which on average make $9.99 hourly and average a yearly income of $20,790. Diane Ruggiero-Wright, writer and producer of the TV show Veronica Mars, worked as a waitress at Park and Orchard in East Rutherford, New Jersey before producing several other works including the movie Pretty the Beast and the CBS show That's Life. Just think, that person handing you your bill could write a fantastic story for Loconeal Publishing or be the next New York's best selling author.
What makes waiters and waitresses happy?
Think to yourself the entire time while enjoying your meal: how would I want to be treated? If you need condiments it is highly recommended that you request them all at the same time. Be direct with your server but remember this does not give you permission to be rude: be polite and courteous. Don't be afraid to ask what's the best thing on the menu; after all they probably know the menu and their chefs better than anyone. Placing your silverware on the plate once finished indicates to the staff that you are done in a very visual way; leaving your spoons all over the table makes for extra unnecessary labor. Sometimes tipping with cash is better than using your debit or credit card because according to USA Today, some places require the waiters or bartenders to pay the credit-card company a service fee. Tipping will really make them happy and if you plan on returning will ensure a quality experience.
What percentage should I tip?
It would seem that 20 percent is the respectable amount to tip according to food bloggers, restaurant connoisseurs, and books published by experienced waiters and waitresses, but for customers who really appreciate their waiter or waitresses extraordinary service, anything over that amount will surely bring a twinkle of joy to the surface of their eyes.
